A German zoo's plans to tempt its gay penguins to go straight by importing more females has been declared a failure. The zoo had hoped that the female penguins—flown in especially from Sweden, no less—would encourage the penguins at the Bremerhaven zoo to reproduce.

But the six male penguins, who have adopted “rocks” which they treat like eggs, showed no interest in their new female companions. As Zoo Director Hieke Kueck puts it: “The relationships were apparently too strong.”
